Cultural Humility & LGBTQ Communities * Non-Credit Course

Description:
Clinicians and other healthcare workers serve sexual and gender minority people every day, but adequate preparation about supporting these populations is rarely offered professional training. Using a Cultural Humility framework, this workshop provides a broad overview of LGBTQ+ terms, gender identity concepts, cultural beliefs, health disparities, and barriers to accessing services, as well as best practice strategies for creating an affirming care experience.

Learning objectives:

Identify developmental, structural, family systems, and psychosocial challenges sexual and gender minority people may encounter.
Explore intersectional identities, disparate risk factors within the LGBTQ community, and the impacts of minority stress; apply the principles of Cultural Humility and Structural Competence to LGBTQ healthcare.
Recognize gender identity concepts and terms, including transgender and nonbinary identities, using appropriate pronouns, respectful language and etiquette.
Increase tools and skills to support gender expansive patients, colleagues, friends and family

Target audience:
Doctors, Physicians Assistants, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical support staff, Social workers, Therapists, and all other Health and Human Service providers.
