Description

Suicide risk reduction efforts with sexual and gender minority communities are an urgent public health imperative. Due to a kaleidoscope of personal and social factors, sexual and gender minority individuals face a unique profile of internal and external stressors that may lead to despair and self-harm. This workshop explores techniques to address these complex intersections to help reduce suicide risks. It also discusses the key role that community plays in building resilience and support structures for sexual and gender minority individuals.

Learning objectives:

  • Examine the role that intersections of racial, sexual, gender, and socioeconomic identity play in increasing or decreasing an individual's risk for suicide.
  • Identify the role of community support in suicide risk reduction for sexual and gender minority populations.
  • Describe the self-harm continuum to contextualize suicide attempts in the broader spectrum of struggles that sexual and gender minority individuals face.
  • Apply the SHARP and harm-reduction frameworks to make safety planning more effective.
